Shape Memory Alloys – Powerful Class of Functional Materials

Section: Scientific and Technical Innovative Projects of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine
Language: Ukrainian
Abstract: The present paper considers one of the classes of functional materials – metallic alloys undergoing martensitic transformations which cause unusual physical-mechanical properties (shape memory effect, superelasticity, high damping capacity etc.). This class of materials got the general name – Shape Memory Alloys (SMA). Physical background for shape memory behavior is described. SMA industrial application and its prospects in Ukraine are discussed. The technologies for SMA production, processing, treatment and semi-finished product preparation are proposed. Working examples of the particular devices incorporated with SMA and developed in the Institute for Metal Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine are given. The prospects for the development of new functional materials, in particular, high temperature shape memory alloys (shape memory takes place at temperatures >150°С), SMA composite materials etc.
Key words: functional materials, martensitic transformations, shape memory alloys, industrial application.
